Here we go again - Auckland is in level 3 and the ESOL blog offers some learning ideas!

Hi, dear ESOL students and parents. Choose a fun activity from the suggestions below and email the results to d.goodall@ghs.school.nz, so I can publish your pictures or texts here on the ESOL blog.

I'm looking forward to your mail already :)

Kind regards - keep safe!

Mrs Goodall

This book is fun for all year levels - and anybody can have a go at these ideas for follow up tasks, too!

Click on the link below and listen to "The Lion in the Library" by Michelle Knudsen.

Idea 1 - Write your own story: A Lion at Gulf Harbour School

I love the idea of a friendly lion visiting our library. What do you think would happen, if he came to visit Gulf Harbour School? What would Mrs Crosbie say? What would Lisa and Mrs Stilwell say - they work so hard to keep our library tidy!? Write a little story about the day the friendly lion came to Gulf Harbour School.

Idea 2 - Draw a picture

It would be very cosy to cuddle up to a friendly lion in the library. Can you draw a picture of you reading a book? Do you read on the sofa cuddled up to a friendly reading buddy? Do you read in your tree hut or on the floor? Do you read to your cat, dog or baby sister? Draw a picture, take a photo of it and send it to me. If you want to you could also take a photo of you reading and email it to me.

Idea 3 - Write your own story: A Dragon in the Library

That friendly lion was certainly an asset for any library. He was helpful and respectful and so kind. Actually, he was resilient and responsible as well. I mean, he didn't eat a single child the whole time he was in the library. I wonder if a dragon would be quite as good as a library assistant. Why don't you use your imagination and write a story about a dragon in the library!?

OMG - Check out Avyan Handa's amazing story about a lion in our library. How cool is this? I love the drawings.

This text is suitable for year 5 and 6 students. It contains information about a famous scientist and inventor.

Now answer the following questions in writing, guys:

1) In the 19th century people didn’t know about bacteria, but they knew that you can become

sick very suddenly.  If you didn’t know anything about germs, what would you think could cause

an illness?

2) Why was Pasteur successful, when he tried to find out what caused milk to go off?

3) What has to happen, so milk is safe to drink?

4) Why is Pasteur’s invention important for mankind?

5) Check your milk at home - is it pasteurised?
