Week 4 - entry 4

This is the first Year 5/6 Explanation Text that has been sent to me:

Well done, Yuliya! That is worth a nice, yummy chocolate reward after the lockdown .... - anyone else keen on working towards it?

Explanation Text : Lockdown and the Easter Bunny
Lockdown means a safety measure helping to stay untouched by the virus. For the children of New Zealand it meant not going to school and staying at home, no shopping with their parents, and not being able to play as freely as they used to. Lockdown also meant that we explored some new ways of playing, learning, making crafts and developing new outdoor activities. It meant more of free time and possibilities to have family time.

Without the Prime Minister’s declaration, the Easter Bunny could not be allowed to go into people’s bubbles. Well, it would have been a challenge to actually go to people’s houses but to leave a little present was also a great way to show that Easter was a happy time even during the lockdown. Though most of the shops were closed and no shopping was possible, children did their part by decorating homes with pictures, drawing and craft figures of Easter. Probably, that made the Easter Bunny understand that he was very welcome.

Benjamin had been working on an explanation text called, "How Wolves Hunt"

Here it is - good job, Benjamin!

I’m going to tell you how wolves hunt.

The wolves hunt everyday. The wolves followed the herd for 3miles. A pack of wolf run silently through the woods

Wolves hunt the weakest elk. They see the slow animal that is not in the group. The wolf need to be careful because the elk is bigger than they are they can seriously injure the wolf

The females go ahead and the males go chase behind the elk. The female dark and dash around the large animal. They separate the elk by confusing the elk and they make it fall father back from the herd. Then they attack and kill the elk.

I feel sad for the elk because the elk gets killed.

Gabriel has found out a lot of information about wolves. I can't wait to read his explanation text about how they hunt!

  • during a chase.There is a record of a gray wolf meking
  • jumps of 7 meters while chasing its prey.

After learning so much about wolves, Gabriel drafted a great explanation text about how they hunt, too. Nice work, Gabriel! Watch this space! Gabriel is going to proofread and edit this piece and it will be published again.

This is the final, published version of Gabriel's text. He added full stops, fixed a few little mistakes and corrected where his paragraphs had to go. Well done, Gabriel!

Hi, today I'm going to talk about wolves and
how wolves hunt.

Sometimes they hunt in big groups. They hunt every day. They eat a lot of meat, whenever they can they eat elk and little animals.

They run silently through the woods. The wolves look for the weakest members of the herd. Then they break into a run. The wolves get the weakest elk of the herd. They kill the elk and the babies watch.

I feel sad, because the elk died. But I don't want the cute wolves to die either.

Enjoy Elly's Explanation Text. I especially like her conclusion (the last part of her text), because it is very clever:

I’m going to tell you how wolves hunt.

Wolves hunt together in a group. Wolves hunt the weakest  and slowest animal. A pack of wolves run silently through the woods. The elk catch the wolves scent and break into a run.

The Lighter females race ahead and males chase behind the elk.
The females dart and dash around the large animal.  This confuses the elk and makes it fall farther back from the herd.

When the elk is completely separated, the rest of the wolves attack.
Sometimes wolves bite the neck, because then the animals can’t breath.

When the pack moves on from the kill, the hunt will begin again.

I think wolves hunt in a special way. It is a good way to hunt, because they work in a group.

This is Elly's work

Year 1 and 2

I hope you enjoyed the story about the bear that wanted his hat back. I have found some other great stories online to share with you this week. The  one for the year 1 and 2 students is called, Somebody Loves You, Mr Hatch.

Here is the link:

Can you tell somebody you love them, too? I bet you can. Write a postcard, a letter or an email and send it to a person that you love or like. It could be a grandparent, a neighbour or a friend. Or you could draw a picture and send it to somebody who is sick or lonely.

This is what you could write:

Dear .......................................,

I love you. I like your smile. Stay safe!

Your ......................

I bet somebody in your bubble can help you with that.

Don't forget to listen to the alphabet song and practise your letters :)

Year 3, 4, 5 and 6!

The book I have chosen for the year 3 to 6 students this week is not for the faint hearted. Mo is a young zombie with a terrible secret ... he hates brains and LOVES vegetables. You can also learn a few Spanish words, when you listen carefully. Note there is an easier or harder task to choose from afterwards.

Click on the link to listen to the story: Zombies Don't Eat Veggies!

Year 3/4 - the easier task

Do you like zombies or are you in love with vegetables? Draw either a zombie menu with images and words for dishes, or a menu for a vegetarian restaurant. Ask your parents to take a picture and email it to me, so I can publish it here on the blog. Look I had a go at a zombie menu:

Watch my video to learn some words about menus:

Mrs Goodall talks about vocabulary to write a menu

These words might help you:
starters, mains, desserts, side dish, sweet, savoury, spicy, sour,

Awesome work, Vika: I love your zombie menu - I bet a lot of zombies will cue up in front of your zombie restaurant, when we go into level 2 ;)

Elli is inviting us to her vegetarian restaurant - very tasty!

I love your vegetarian menu, Almeer - well done!

Year 5/6 - the more difficult task
Follow the WAKA model:

I wonder ..... can I write a persuasive text about eating vegetables?
This story is not so much about vegetables than about being different. Mo's parents love him no matter what - even if he chooses to eat carrots. But I love vegetables and they are so good for you. Therefore I want you to pretend that you are Mo and write a letter to your zombie parents. Try and talk them into eating veggies. Yes, write a persuasive text. Give it a go. It's like an explanation, but you use your ideas to talk somebody into doing what you want them to do.

When we follow our inquiry model we can't go wrong:

I take action ..... why are vegetables good for you?

You will need to support your arguments. Click on this link to find out more about fruit and vegetables and why they are so good for you.

Click on the link to learn about why vegetables are good for you: kiwikidsnews: Eat-your-vegetables/

Now I know ... I can organise my knowledge and ideas?

Now use a planner to organise your ideas:

Click on the link to download a burger planner: Burger Planner for Persuasive Text

That means I can apply my new knowledge and the effort I put into organising it all....

Write your pretend letter by Mo to his parents on a google doc.

Share your text on your google doc with me. I will publish it on the ESOL blog.

Joao has done a fantastic job with his persuasive letter written by Mo to his parents. It's funny, too. He does use the information from the article about vegetables and he bears in mind that he is actually talking to zombies. Nice job, Joao!

Why are greens good

Dear parents

I thought you could try some veggies , I know you don’t like them but if you change your mind , I can cook some and show you some of my recipes.

Vegetables are good because they can make you stronger , for example , carrot is good for your eyes , and Brussels sprouts are good for strong legs , all because of vitamins and minerals , they keep you healthy . But when you buy them , make sure you buy them from a trusted brand , because sometimes you have to wash the vegetables first , because they sometimes use chemicals to make it tastier or they use too many pesticides , so wash them before eating them . Other things good about vegetables is they are super tasty (especially tomatoes , lettuce , and carrots) sometimes they fit well in a brain salad or a flesh stew , try putting some in your food.

But of course don’t eat too many of them , so your head does not explode because you don’t like them and so I can eat them too!

Kind regards

Your son

Wow, Yuliya has two published texts on the blog this week!!!

Dear zombie mum and dad,
I hope you are well.
I wanted to write to you a letter about vegetables and the reasons I want to eat this food more and more.
1.       Sugar is not healthy. We watched a film called ‘That Sugar Film’, this was about eating too much sugar products and how this affects your body. The film made it clear that we should eat natural sources of sweetness like fruit and veggies, dried fruit, dark chocolate or home-made cookies with no sugar.
2.       You can cook varied and tasty dishes.  You can experiment with your cooking. You can roast, boil, mash, stew or eat fresh vegetables as snacks or salads. You can make a feast of goodness with some spices and oils.
3.       You can do creative things like veggie noodles.  You can cut veggies in different shapes and sizes and arrange them so they will look very inviting!  They will look beautiful and capture your eye.
4.       There is no downside to eating vegetables. Vegetables have lots of nutrients and fibre, and eating them can even protect you from diseases, especially if you eat a variety, it’s called ‘eat the rainbow’.
5.       They are inexpensive. Buying vegetables is not a huge expense and you can save money through cutting your spending on sugar rich food that is not healthy.
6.       By buying local veggies we support local farmers and workers. We also can build long-term relationships with the people who grow and make it possible for us to have good food.
7.       You are full for a long time and you stay healthy and grow strong. You have good and clean skin and teeth, and the balanced diet will result in a right and fit body shape. Energy is never low in a period of time if you eat the right food.
8.       Eating a plant-based diet can save the lives of animals and is more nature-friendly.
I hope now you will eat vegetables more often.  Let’s find new recipes together.
