ESOL blog Entry 2 - Week 2 term 2

Year 1 and 2 Students

Hi parents and caregivers! How are you doing?

Please, carry on with your great work, singing the phonics song and maybe add in practising sight words. Why don't you play a sight word hunt inside or even in the garden? You write down easy words such as I to my you, went, like, look. Check the word list that the classroom teacher might have provided for your child.

The Gingerbread Man

And now what?

Theses pictures might help you and your child to retell the story! They are not in the right order though. - Be careful!

If you have a keen writer at home, they might like to draw a picture from the story and then write a sentence about it. A bit like my worksheet suggests:

Year 3 and 4 Students (and Year 1s and 2s - just for fun, give it a go!)

Clark, the Shark

Task 1
Now you can answer some questions and email me the answers:

Why does Clark get in trouble?
How does Mrs Inkydink help Clark?
What are the rhymes Clark makes up to remember how to behave?
Do you know rules that help you how to behave well in class?
Now that we are all in lockdown, how should we behave?

You can also draw me a picture to show how we should behave, guys.

Task 2: Read the text about sharks to somebody in your bubble. Tell somebody why sharks always have nice teeth. (That is called explaining.)

Julian and Lawrence have done their ESOL home learning already - you are champions!!

Vika has worked very hard - good job, Vika!

Nice job, Elli!

Year 5 and 6 Students

Explanation Text Writing: Why did the Prime Minister declare, "the Easter bunny is an essential worker"?

How do you put an explanation text together?

We can use a burger planner.

Burger planner by Sheena Cameron and Louise Dempsey

Let's plan for our first paragraph:

Does that make sense to you so far? - Great! I want you to plan for paragraph 2 and 3 now.

Paragraph 2
What is an essential worker?

Paragraph 3
Why was the Easter bunny declared to be an essential worker?

You can draw up your own burger planner at home and fill in the plan for the paragraphs 2 and 3. Remember, I did paragraph 1 for you. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence and details, explanation, elaboration or examples to back your topic sentence and give your reader all the information they need. Just like my example shows.

Share your planning as a google doc or email it to me, please. I will publish your work here again.
