Term 1 2021 - lockdown number 2! We've got this Gulf Harbour: Check out these ideas to keep you busy :)

Click on this link: Holton Takes the Ice and enjoy a heart warming and very clever story about a boy that was born into an ice hockey family, but wanted to be a figure skater.

Task 1

Listen to the story and decide which statement - or statements, several ones can be chosen - are correct. Then think about why you think so:

The story is about resilience, because ..........................

The story is about being different, because ........................

The story says that it's easy to be different, because .................

The story says that it's hard to be different, because .........

Task 2

I love the great language in the story. The author describes how Holton skates in so many different ways. Listen carefully - how many words can you write down that Sandra Bradley used in her story?

Task 3

If you could be amazing at any sport, what would it be? Would you want to be the fastest runner in the world? A figure skater? An All Black or a swimmer? Tell me what it would be and why you would love to be that top athlete. Draw a picture of yourself playing this sport.

Task 4

The Holton family had a lot of ice hockey photos on their wall. Can you draw a picture of Henry as a figure skater in a frame so that his picture can make it onto the wall, too?

For our new language learners (and enybody who wants to revise some vocabulary) these games might be fun. If you click on the words, the link becomes visible:

The Opposite Song

Are you in year 1 or 2? Enjoy these songs and activities to learn about letters, sounds and syllables!

Phonics Song

By the way, the video doesn't tell you that a syllable always contains a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). That makes it easier to know, where to chop the word.

A big shoutout to Leah for working on a tasdk about Jane Addams. Here is her email:

Hello Mrs Goodall this is my answers to the Jane Addams questions 1.What prestigious prize did Jane Addams receive in 1931? Indeed , she was admitted to a Baltimore hospital on the very day , December 10 ,1931 , that the Noble peace was being awarded to her in Oslo. 2. Name some of the causes Jane Addams worked for in her life. Jane Addams worked to help the poor and to stop the use of children as industrial laborers.

Check out new ideas to keep you busy in week 6!

Hi there! Well done, Gulf Harbour School for another week of lockdown that you used to learn and create.

I have a few more ideas for activities that help you learn but hopefully might be fun as well. Don't forget to email me your work so I can publish it on the blog.

All the best,

Mrs Goodall

It is so important to have friends. Watch the youtube video about one boy's amazing idea: The Buddy Bench :)

Click on the link to watch the video: https://youtu.be/V7Z-Hq-xvxM

What did you think about this idea? Have you ever had a sad time, because you didn't have a friend to play with? Write it down and send it to d.goodall@ghs.school.nz

I love the idea of a buddy bench - but it doesn't work in lockdown. What could work in lockdown? Send me your ideas!!!

This is my idea: You could write an email to your friends or your family. Why don't you send a kind message for somebody that could be published here on the blog?

This is my message for a wonderful friend of mine:

Dear Mrs Southgate,

I just wanted to message you to let you know that I am thinking of you in lockdown. I miss our chats and your great humour. We always have a laugh, even when times are a bit tougher. That is so nice. Let's meet up on Zoom soon.

Your friend, Mrs Goodall

You can email me your message and it can be published here :) d.goodall@ghs.school.nz

Listen to this story, called Sylvester and the Magic Pebbel by William Steig. It is a lovely story with a happy ending (I let you know that right now, because Sylvester gets into serious trouble!).

Click on the link to listen to the story:

Did you like the story? A wish is a powerful thing and very often people wish for the wrong things, right!? Write down a wish for the right thing - think about it carefully: What is the most important thing to wish for ....? Write it down and email it to d.goodall@ghs.school.nz

Sylvester collects pebbles. Go outside and find some pretty pebbles, too. What else can you find? - A feather, a shell, an interesting twig? Arrange those things prettily and email a photo to d.goodall@ghs.school.nz

Check out these ideas:

Thank you, Avyan for sharing your wish to become a dancer with us. That is very cool!

Hi year 5 and 6 students! This book is more suited for you, I guess. It's a true story about a woman called Jane Addams, written by Tanya Lee Stone.

Find out about this remarkable American lady that wanted to make the world a better place. She is an inventor in her own rights, yet not a scientist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qITsQKHAZy8

Did you like the book? Then why don't you find out more about Jane Addams? Just google her, because the picture book doesn't have all the answers. In fact it is intersting to compare what else you can find out with the book. Send in the answers to the following questions:

What prestigious prize did Jane Addams receive in 1931?

Name some of the causes Jane Addams worked for in her life.

Jane had dreamed to become a doctor to help the poor. She became ill, when she was studying medicine and never finished her degree, which made her very sad. However, she achieved so much. What can we learn from her "failure"?

Kia Kaha, Gulf Harbour - Stay safe, my friends!!
